Invisalign has exploded in popularity around the world over the last few years, in no small part due to its discreet nature in comparison to traditional braces. The preferred choice among many adults and teens alike who are looking to correct their smiles, Invisalign is an excellent option for correcting your teeth while still presenting a natural-looking smile to the world in the process.

What about teeth whitening during treatment?

Although Invisalign aligners are more discreet than traditional braces, it’s still a major orthodontic treatment for your mouth. It’s important to go into the process fully prepared. One of the most common questions that arises around Invisalign is related to teeth whitening — namely, can it still be carried out while you’re utilising the clear plastic aligners?

At Smile Team, we recommend teeth whitening after Invisalign treatment has finished. It is best to wait until treatment is completed as some Invisalign attachments used during the treatment can lead to uneven whitening. It’s also important to remember that Invisalign is reshaping how your teeth sit in your mouth, so getting your teeth whitened can still leave your mouth looking somewhat patchy within a couple of months. As your teeth are shifted around in your mouth, areas that weren’t previously able to be whitened can be exposed by Invisalign — meaning they may be a different colour.

Accordingly, you may be better served by having periodic whitening treatments post-invisalign. Although it’s necessary to wear a retainer post-Invisalign, at this point it’s more about keeping your teeth in place as opposed to gradually shifting them to another part of your mouth. This can make the whitening process significantly easier.

However, everyone’s mouth is different and it’s always recommended to speak to your dentist or orthodontist for more information before settling on a decision.

FAQs

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic method for straightening teeth that serves as an alternative to traditional braces. Rather than using metal tracks, it uses clear plastic aligners that attach over your teeth in a similar fashion to retainers. It’s virtually invisible, comfortable and metal-free.

Invisalign has become increasingly popular due to its discreet nature; having a comparatively invisible treatment can provide for a natural-looking smile throughout. It can also be an easier process for adults who are wanting to maintain a professional look in the workplace. As adult mouths have finished growing, they’re also often better suited to the treatment.

How much does Invisalign in Australia cost?

Invisalign prices vary from person to person. Though the typical course of Invisalign aligners is 12 to 18 months, it can vary depending on your specific needs and the severity of the issues being addressed. However, if you’re considering Invisalign, we offer a complimentary assessment to see whether you’re suited for the treatment and can also provide guidelines on the projected cost. We can discuss how much Invisalign in Sydney costs, as well as at our other locations in Wollongong, Shellharbour or the Southern Highlands.

Does Invisalign work?

Yes. Invisalign is a highly effective — and discreet — means of straightening teeth and addressing orthodontic issues. However, it’s not effective in every instance; sometimes the issues may be too severe to be corrected with aligners. Similarly, it may not always be an ideal option for children. As their mouths are still growing and changing shape, it may be more effective to opt for braces instead, as they are affixed directly to the teeth and can be adjusted as required.

Does Invisalign make your teeth yellow?

Invisalign won’t turn your teeth yellow on its own — it’s intended to make your teeth look as natural as possible while you’re undergoing realignment. As always, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene practices while you’re undertaking Invisalign. This will help avoid any discolouration, while also keeping your teeth healthy as they are adjusted.

How do I keep my teeth white with Invisalign?

As Invisalign aligners are worn in the mouth for up to 22 hours a day, it can be easy for stray food or bacteria to get caught, if not following good oral hygiene practices. In turn, this can cause a variety of other oral health issues. Your dentist will be able to provide more information on how to best care for your teeth and aligners, but the broad strokes are the same as for any other oral care — brush, floss and use mouthwash twice a day. Again, as mentioned above – teeth whitening is best left after treatments.

Do you get free whitening with Invisalign?

Although we don’t specifically provide free whitening with Invisalign, you and your orthodontist will arrange a treatment plan suited to your smile which may include whitening treatments after your Invisalign treatment is finalised.
